NAFISA ANTARA

LIGHT
Our project's purpose was to create chapels that could serve any faith, with a particular emphasis on optimizing lighting conditions through the use of section analysis, sun angle, and various techniques such as backlighting and reflectors. The chapel project, located on the Farmingdale State College campus, displays a sophisticated and careful approach to lighting. By utilizing our research in lighting design and architectural analysis, we were able to create a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, providing an ideal environment for worship and reflection.
Background Research
Hagia Sophia - Isodoros and Anthemos
Hagia Sophia, located in Fatih, Istanbul, Turkey, is a historic building that showcases the use of complex geometric proportions to create a spatial spectacle that allows natural light to provide an atmosphere conducive to religious acts.
The building was designed to utilize natural light to provide a sense of divine illumination. The architects incorporated large openings known as lunettes above the galleries and main hall to let natural light flow into the interior and illuminate the golden mosaics.
The Hagia Sophia's use of natural light, along with its innovative lighting techniques throughout the centuries, has made it a noteworthy example of how lighting design can be used to create a unique and inspiring environment for religious and cultural purposes."
